La scelta del soggetto come quella delle tonalità cromatiche conferiscono a quest’opera un’atmosfera cupa, dolorosa e allo stesso tempo surreale: una giovane donna giace stesa su un divanetto, le braccia lungo il corpo, il volto reclinato, gli occhi chiusi. Ma vi è un elemento vitale che cattura l’attenzione, il ramo ligneo, di un rosso intenso, filo conduttore di numerose opere dell’artista.

The work is pervaded by a strong symbolism of an almost neoclassical flavor which is expressed mostly in the poses and gestures of the two subjects, woman and man, in the center, in silent dialogue: as they stand side by side she’s barely naked, he’s heavily cloaked, he holds her hand meanwhile catching her eyes. The colour intensity, here particularly dominant, is a recurring element which was already present in other paintings: the blue of the fabrics and the red of the branch strongly contrast with the darkness of the starry background.
